This light-hearted tale begins in Sanditon, where Mr. Darcy has leased Lady Denham's grand house (that lady's capriciousness leads to Elizabeth and Georgiana Darcy's discovery of a cache of smuggled goods). Also in the seaside town are Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Parker, his sisters and his brother Arthur, who are familiar with Sir Edward Denham and his sister Esther.
Meanwhile, Mary Ashton (née Bennet) and her husband Christopher indulge in a bit of matchmaking. Lydia Wickham grows impatient in York, especially with her sister, Kitty, who is expecting. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet enjoy walking together in the medieval town, and Jane and Charles Bingley worry that his sister, Miss Caroline Bingley, is destined for spinsterhood. All this and more, whilst the Congress of Vienna (aka the largest social gathering in history) proves to be an avenue for political connivery.
