Hildie, which was short for Hildegard, watched in shock when the auction for mail order brides was over and she was the last one standing who hadn't been picked. The only thing wrong with her is she was a tad bit taller than the other girls; well maybe quite a bit taller if she were being truthful. She had always been told she had a pretty face and figure; however, she guessed no man wanted to climb a ladder to talk to her.

The orphanage where she had been living was now closed and she was all on her own with no money and she was wearing the only clothes she had. Panic began to sweep through her as she tried to keep her wits about her while trying to figure out what she was going to do. Suddenly her thoughts were interrupted by a wagon traveling at a high rate of speed toward her. If she didn't move, she would be run over, and she'd have more trouble than she already had!

Ben Woodman needed a wife and was running late for the mail order bride auction. As he was leaving to come to the auction, his mare Bessy went into labor. He needed the new colt or filly and had to stay until the new birth was completed.
