Katherine's BFF, Danielle, disappeared suddenly over a year ago. One night, out of the blue, Katherine got a somewhat cryptic call from Danielle inviting her to a party. She would have called you but was forbidden to do so. She was so insistent that I finally relented and allowed that ban to be lifted this once."

I blinked a few times as she just looked at me. "I'm confused," I said. "She was forbidden? Why? I have a hard time believing she would give anyone that kind of authority. Who are you that you have that much control over her life or anyone else's for that matter?"

"There is much to explain. Danielle wants you to know about her new life and friends. She wants you to know she is well and is flourishing. Save for not having you in it, her life could not be better. Her words, not mine."

"Why isn't SHE telling me this?"

"Fear, mostly. Katherine, there are things you will learn that will almost certainly alter your view of her. She said she could not stand to see you disappointed in her, disgusted by her or, worse, afraid of her."

"What THINGS? Why would I be afraid of HER? Are you guys some sort of cult or crime family?"

"We are a family, of sorts. Not a cult nor a crime family. It is because of what she has become and what we are: Danielle, me, Francois and some others here."

"What do you mean what you ARE?"

"We are Vampires, Dear."

The room began to spin, the lights blinked on and off, then darkness.
