Description
Diyali was born on Diwali. The night when we celebrate the victory of good over evil. Perhaps that is why she was so rebellious. She refused to accept the difference in treatment given to the sons and daughters in her family. Where the boys had separate rooms and freedom to go in and out of the house, the five girls were all packed in one room like parcels that would be sent off to their husband's house at a suitable time. The girls had to help in the house. The boys were waited on hand and foot. Diyali rebelled. She broke things. She jumped naked into the temple pond. She fought with elders. Her family quickly sent her off to live in her mama's house to avoid her turbulence. Her mama and mami sent her to France to boarding school.
Rupendre was the eldest boy among four children. The other three were sisters. He grew up seeing how wrapped up in each other and their own work his parents were. So he became more protective of his sisters. He protected his mother too. He protected his best friend. It seemed to be his assigned task to solve everybody's problems.
How was it that when he met Diyali she could not see this side of him? Did she think he was as boorish and entitled as the men in her family!!?
He was an eligible catch. He was head over heels in love with her. She herself was madly in love with him yet she fought tooth and nail to resist the magnetic pull he had on her.
Why was she like this??
"Don't ask me why", she said when Rupendre asked her why she was the way she was. What was the reason??
