Description
The war has left James Coumerilh with a past that haunts him. It has made his life untenable on the land where he grew up, and nearly died for. In a quest for a new beginning, he decides to put distance between him and these demons and travels by steamboat up the Missouri River to Fort Benton, Montana. It is somewhere beyond there that he hopes to find his uncle, a nomadic Metis man. He is not long into this journey when he realizes there is no escaping one's past, nor apparently, the depravations and violence of the times. Unfortunately for James, there is no going back.
