War has taken everything from Nerys. While out one night for an illicit tryst with the soldier who has promised to marry her, Nerys learns that this wasn't his intention at all -- and he knocks her unconscious instead. When she wakes, she returns to her war-torn village only to find it destroyed and its inhabitants ritually massacred. With her entire family dead and her home destroyed, her only aim becomes to kill the soldier who betrayed her.

She successfully infiltrates the army's camp to find her ex-lover, but is caught by Idris, an enemy spy. He claims that her king is responsible for the carnage and is sacrificing his own subjects so he can summon a demon to aid him in his war of conquest. But Idris has a tempting offer for Nerys -- pretend to be a courtier so she can seduce and kill the king before he can successfully complete the ritual and drag all the surrounding kingdoms into war.

Nerys accepts. She is painstakingly taught a lifetime's worth of etiquette and court politics to mask a plot to place her into the king's inner circle, all while battling her growing attraction to the spy who gave her a new purpose.

But a nightmarish demon with plans of his own begins to stalk Nerys, and she reluctantly concludes that in order to stop the king, she is going to have to team up with the spirit world herself. Once she arrives at the palace, Nerys must navigate a betrayal-ridden court and the vicious world of unseen spirits in order to get close enough to the king to kill him. If her assassination attempt fails, not only is her life forfeit -- the kingdoms will be plunged into a demon-fueled war that will tear what is left of her kingdom apart.
