Description
Regimen Books places an emphasis on quality in its books. Samuel Rawson Gardiner wrote his biography of Oliver Cromwell in the late 1800s. This Regimen Books edition has updated a variety of language usages -- particularly spelling and punctuation -- to conform to modern American practices and forms.
Oliver Cromwell may have been the most important Englishman of all time -- in fact, one of the most important figures in world history. He was at the head of the movement that established Europe's first republican government. It has served as the model for many representative governments that have followed.
A contemporary said of Cromwell that a "larger soul, I think, has seldom dwelt in a house of clay."
Yet, Cromwell's reputation with later generations has varied greatly. Many critics today belittle him because he was a Puritan -- and our secular culture frowns on things that smack of serious Christianity. With, though, historians who recognize the problem with such present-mindedness, Cromwell has long held a respected place.
One of the very best of those historians was Samuel Rawson Gardiner. His biography of the "Lord Protector," published in 1899, is based on a thorough use of primary documents and yet is easy for most modern readers to handle. It offers a balanced account unmarred by modern secular bias and remains one of the best introductions to the life of Cromwell that has ever been written.
Samuel Rawson Gardiner was a leading historian of the English Civil War and the Puritan Revolution. His complete history, covering the period from 1603 to 1660, was comprised of nineteen volumes. He relied heavily on primary sources and is noted for the even-handedness with which he handled his subject.
