Joey Costa pays for his law school education by working for John Carbone's organized crime family. After passing the California Bar exam, he's about leave the Carbones to become a lawyer. Then, one morning, John's daughter Angie murders her abusive husband, panics, and asks him for help. Costa rescues her by impersonating the victim and hiding her crime. Unfortunately, Angie's father-in-law -- an Irish mobster -- suspects the Carbones are responsible for his son's disappearance. As the father-in-law doggedly investigates, Costa uses his wiles to keep him at bay. Costa joins a law firm as a criminal defense lawyer. He works his way up from misdemeanor cases to major felonies. In his personal life, he meets and courts a nice Irish girl and helps two close friends with shaky careers and romances.
