Description
Why would someone choose a career that terrifies her?
From early childhood, Kathi Davis suffered from phobias -- dread of heights, anxiety when facing new experiences, and, most puzzling, panic about flying because she had never been on an airplane. When seeking a career path as a college senior in 1970 with a BA in psychology, she finds limited options. She searches for a well-paying job she can do until she saves enough money to persue an advanced degree. At a friend's suggestion, she applies to be an airline ticket agent (which will keep her safely on the ground). Upon arriving at the airline's hiring office, she learns there are no agent positions available so, instead, interviews to be a stewardess and gets the job.
Telling no one at the airline about her fears, she comes to terms with feeling like an imposter in a stewardess uniform. Her journey is one of resilience, transformation, and self-discovery, confronting life-or-death situations in the air and sea, enduring a toxic first marriage, and coping with her mother's and her second husband's dementia.
Her story is set against the backdrop of historical and cultural events, and the social issues of the latter part of the twentieth century, not the least of which is women's rights. With a healthy dose of humor, The Closest Exit May Be Behind You is the candid, poignant, and deeply personal story of how she turned a job for which she was so ill-suited into a successful thirty-five-year career.
