The Spark: Book 2, The Weight of Gold, is a continuation of the perilous trek to rescue Clara's best friend and nursemaid, Annie, from the clutches of an evil slave holder in Missouri. The group Clara has brought together lands on the shore of the Mississippi and travels by night to avoid slave traders and bounty hunters. A new character briefly enters the scene, adding more danger to their trip.

Through deep forests of a mostly unsettled state and over rugged rocky hillsides, the group barely avoids capture on their quest to rescue Annie. Cookie, the gruff cook who had taken Clara under his wing at the Sweet Vine Saloon, hands her his only remembrance of his lost wife, her golden wedding ring, with instructions to wear it, pretending to be married to the teen age boy who chose to accompany them.
