Description
An account of my year as a combat helicopter in Vietnam through prism of a now 82 year old. My experience in a war ill conceived and even more poorly managed. This was a decade long war where 58000 of young Americans lost their lives and took the lives of countless innocent civilians. I was a scout pilot serving with the 1st Cav. All the while flying in a ship wholly unsuited for combat. It was probably the most hazardous flying job in any combat before or since.
Of course, there are harrowing stories of combat; death and wounded. All the while carrying out missions of incalculable danger. Paradoxical accounts of combat constricted by inane "Rules of Engagement". Comrades killed and wounded demonstrating extraordinary courage and commitment. Time for tragedy and humor bordering on the inane. A year of unforgettable and in some case unforgivable events. Twelve months of combat, comedy and chaos.
The author survived 1100+ hours of combat flying time. Awarded a Silver Star, Bronze Star, 32 Air Medals, and Purple Heart. Survived being shot down 8 times living to tell these stories some 60 years later.
