Description
• On The Happy Life (or originally De Vita Beata) is one of the ten Dialogi written by Seneca and it's dedicated to his brother Gallio.
• The Dialogi were not real dialogues but reflections about key aspects of life with occasional questions from a fictional interlocutor
• The 25 chapters of this essay face one of the crucial themes of the moral life: happiness
• In the first part he presents the stoic doctrine where living a happy life means living according to nature with as a polar star the main good that is virtue.
• In the second part of the essay he defends himself from defends himself against allegations regarding his wealth and his luxurious life; he writes that the sapiens can accept material goods to make good use of them without being a slave and ready to detach from them without regrets in every moment because as the fate gave them it can take them away from you in every moment.
• To reach Happiness (Virtue) isn't an easy thing, writes Seneca, and just a few people are really close to it; the mentality to keep is the mentality of the research focusing on the small steps done and to get a little better everyday because this is a work in progress that lasts a whole life; to try to improve every day a good habit of the Stoics was to take a daily journal,in this book at the end of every chapter there is a blank page left to write you reflections about what you've read.
