Description
Malca had many hopes for her new life as a pioneer. She was not going to let them go so easily.
1920s, Israel. After losing both her parents, Malca Frish, a young nursing student, immigrates to Israel to live with her aunt Pesheh. After promising herself she would complete her studies and become a nurse, her hopes are dashed when she learns that Pesheh is unstable and requires constant care. Pesheh's husband, Haim Salzberg, a once successful businessman and now a lowly dairy farmer, cannot afford her treatment.
Forcing her to cater to Pesheh's every whim, Malca is trapped under her aunt's abuse. Yet the quiet and sensitive Malca knows she deserves better. Determined to keep her promise, she uses her knowledge and experience to become the village's unofficial nurse.
As she becomes more independent, she discovers there's more to the world than her aunt's cramped shack. She sets her sights on Shalom Shatz, a handsome poet with lofty ideologies, who's heart belongs to someone else. And as Pesheh's condition worsens, Malca must find her way out and carve her own path.
The Land of Broken Promises is a poignant coming-of-age story of an ambitious young woman finding her own voice, written from the perspective of a pioneering Jewish feminist author.
