Description
The Corn Laws have forced the price of wheat high. The end of the wars has sent half a million soldiers and sailors back to find work, pushing wages to a new low. Landowners who produce wheat are bringing in their highest incomes ever and collecting sky-high rents. The Landed Interest is, for the while, triumphant in England. But those who can look to the future are terrified of revolution, following the French precedent.
Nathaniel Perry, Viscount Palfrey, is concerned about protecting his family and can see their only safety lying in trading in the British Empire and investment in the North Country.
The power of the landowners is certain to be short-lived, as will be those people themselves if they spark revolution by their greed. It is the Golden Age of Agriculture, but the foundations of that age are shaky and the rulers of the country are blind.
