Description
'The most significant work of its kind.' Times Literary Supplement
Winner of the Hawthornden Prize in 1925 -- Britain's oldest literary prize.
From the mud and terror of the Western Front to the quiet endurance of rural France, The Spanish Farm Trilogy is one of the most remarkable portraits of the Great War ever written.
The Spanish Farm - a solid old farmstead in French Flanders, named in the Spanish wars of centuries ago - now faces the horrors of the First World War with the same stolidity. Billeted out as accommodation for the thousands of young soldiers heading to and from the trenches, the farm becomes an oasis of enduring sanity for those who pass through its doors.
Through the eyes of Madeleine Vanderlynden -- a proud, resilient Flemish woman determined to protect her family's farm -- and the soldiers who pass through her world, from the disillusioned English officer Geoffrey Skene to the idealistic Frenchman Georges d'Archeville, this powerful trilogy explores love, loyalty and the shattering cost of war.
From the trenches of the Somme and Arras to the shattered villages of Flanders, men fight, and die amid mud, fire and the thunder of guns. For those who return, victory brings no peace -- only the haunting memory of what was lost. Together, their stories form a powerful portrait of ordinary lives transformed by the Great War's relentless toll.
