Learn how to draw the characters and then let the puzzles set them in memory
This new approach to learning hiragana and katakana replaces numbers and letters with kana in popular puzzles such as sudoku, Word Search, Hitori and Renzoko amongst others. This is a game changer for learning katakana, as equal weight is given to these characters which are a lot less common than hiragana in most texts.
When solving just one sudoku puzzle you can read a single character over 50 times - Hitori and Domino puzzles can have you pairing and reading corresponding characters over 25 times. The act of solving these puzzles - constantly reading, comparing, reflecting and deducing breeds familiarity and the resulting brain activity is known to aid long term retention.
• With a simple guide to stroke order learning kana is made simpler as you won't have to memorize stroke order for each character.
• As you engage with the puzzles you become more familiar with the kana, you are constantly comparing, reflecting and deducing - the resulting brain activity is known to aid in retention of information.
• A stronger connection between corresponding characters is achieved with the use of puzzles that require pairing to solve.
• Without the need for vocabulary, equal weight is given to all characters making katakana much easier to retain - many find katakana more difficult as it is less common in Japanese text than hiragana.
• See your progress with the reading exercises at the end of each section. These allow for a system of stepped repetition to help with long term memory.
• You will become more familiar with similar characters as they are incorporated into puzzles as they are learned. There is also a further section on similar kana and tips are given on how to differentiate these along with more puzzles focusing on these characters.
• You will also learn about guttural sounds, and the use of smaller kana to produce combined sounds and longer vowel sounds found in the Japanese language.
Hopefully this method will lead you to a deeper retention with a more engaging and enjoyable approach.
