Description
A workman is killed in a horrifying accident at a Southwark sawmill when a heavy circular blade breaks loose without warning. The authorities are satisfied that the cause was mechanical failure, and the matter is quickly closed.
Inspector Lestrade is not so certain. His own enquiries reveal that the dead man was a violent drinker, feared and loathed by his fellow workmen, and that ill feeling at the works ran deep. Troubled by what he has learned, he brings the case to Sherlock Holmes.
Holmes agrees to examine the affair -- but only on his own terms, and well away from prying eyes. What he and Dr. Watson uncover casts the tragedy in an entirely different light; yet even when the truth begins to emerge, one question remains disturbingly unresolved: if this was no accident, then who, precisely, is responsible?
