Description
I come back to town for a short-term contract and one very specific plan: to connect with my best friend, Vanessa.
Vanessa has other plans. texting. Lots of texting. Texting daily warnings about her terrible ex... and his friends. I think they're Daniel and Davis; she never makes it clear.
Daniel, who matches Vanessa's stories of her ex, has the personality of an unsupervised raccoon.
Then there's Davis, with whom I'm required to work closely. He's my complete opposite, and the last man I should be noticing. He's calm where I'm chaos, annoyingly kind.
His kids like me. They hand me crayon drawings. They tell me I "make Dad happy."
Liking Davis feels wrong. Flirting with him feels dangerous. And falling for him feels like betraying Vanessa.
But if I walk away now, I don't just lose the contract.
I lose laughter, late-night conversations, crayon art, and the chance at a love that feels easy, real, and exactly like home.
And that might be the biggest mistake of all.
