Rusty is on the trail of a gang of bank robbers who have fled north from Colorado into Wyoming Territory. He chases them to north central Wyoming, near Sheridan, where he discovers they've taken the son of a rancher hostage. Rusty agrees to do what he can to rescue the boy, and when he does, he suspends his hunt for the outlaws long enough to return him home.

The outlaws follow, intent on getting their hostage back, leading to a standoff at the boy's home, that will test every skill Rusty possesses if he and the family are to survive.
