Description

After the Soviets deport him and his mother to Kazakhstan, a young Polish boy must find the will to survive freezing temperatures, hunger, and brutal physical labor while holding on to the hope of ever returning home.

1940, Lwów. Sixteen-year-old Roman Bader wakes up startled by a loud banging on the door. It's been three days since the Soviets arrested his father and now soldiers are back at their home, barking orders at Roman and his mother to quickly pack up their belongings. Before he realizes what's going on, they are forced onto a cattle car and sent away to an unknown fate.

After weeks on the road and constant fear of deportation to Siberia, Roman is stunned to discover their true destination: the remote Kazakh steppe. Abandoned to the freezing cold, he must quickly adapt to a harsh Soviet regime of forced labor. With no heating and little food, Roman works from sunrise to sunset, harvesting the fields, tending the stables, and fixing heavy machinery.

As time passes, Roman learns the ways of the local Kazakh nomads, whose rich culture has been stripped by their new rulers. But with no end to his unjust imprisonment in sight, how much longer can Roman endure not knowing if he will ever see his father or home again?

Based on Roman's real journal entries, Diary of a Boy in Exile depicts a complex portrait of life under Soviet rule and tells the astonishing story of a young boy's perseverance and humanity in times of unbearable hardship.
