Texas Ranger J.D. Instead, Slater stops in Beeville, a small town in South Texas, for unknown reasons.

In Beeville, J.D. meets Eustis Tucker, a young lawyer in town, and the two men hit it off. Their relationship becomes closer when J.D. learns that Eustis is handling a legal case involving a man who has an indirect relationship to the man he's after. The man in Eustis's case is, in many ways, even more dangerous than the killer, and J.D. and Eustis must join forces and use all their skill and wits in order to succeed in carrying out their sworn duties.
